How to import videos and photos from iPhoto to iMovie (iMovie 09 included)

Lately my friend Candy got a special birthday gift from her parents. They selected some photos and videos during the grow-up process of Candy and made them into a video. They call it “footprints”. Isn't it a lovely gift? Many of my friends have Mac but they don't know how to do that with iMovie. This tutorial introduces how to import videos or photos from iPhoto to iMovie (I use iMovie 08. In iMovie 09, the steps would be similar).

Part 1: Import photos to iMovie

Step 1: Launch iMovie then go to Window: Check “Photos” as the picture bellow.

Launch iMovie

Step 2: You'll find this window on the lower right corner of iMovie and now you can drag and drop the photos you want.

Note: In iMovie 09, you can find this iPhoto button on the lower right corner.

Part 2: Import videos from iPhoto to iMovie

If the format of the videos in iPhoto is .mov .m4v or mp4, two simple steps can get it done.

Step 1: Launch iMovie, go to “File > Import movies”.

Step 2: Select “photos” to open iPhoto library then browse through the iPhoto library to find the videos you want. Click “import”

The format of videos from camcorder might not be compatible with iMovie. So we need to convert the videos first. Many video converters can do that and I use iSkysoft Video Converter for Mac. Don't know how to convert videos? Here is a tutorial of Video Converter for Mac.

After the conversion, you can import the converted files to iMovie by going to File menu > Import> Movies or follow the above steps.
